Kathmandu , Former Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah formally assumed the position of senior leader at the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) on Sunday after submitting his resignation from the mayoral post.

Amid a large gathering of party supporters and cadres, Shah arrived at the RSP central office where he officially marked his party entry by ringing the bell placed in the office premises. RSP Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane and party leader DP Aryal welcomed him during the ceremony.

Shah had signed a seven-point agreement with RSP Chair Lamichhane on Poush 13, paving the way for his party entry. Sunday marked his first visit to the party office following the agreement. He remained at the office for around 15 minutes before leaving.

According to party sources, Shah is scheduled to travel to Janakpur later this evening. The RSP is organizing a program in Janakpur on Monday, which will be attended by Chairperson Lamichhane and senior leader Shah.

Shah resigned from his mayoral position to contest the House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21 under the RSP banner. He submitted his resignation to Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol, effective from Sunday. His resignation with around 15 months remaining in his term has raised questions about whether a by-election will be held to fill the vacant mayoral post.
