Kathmandu, Joint General Secretary of the Nepali Congress Udaya Shumsher Rana has been nominated as the party’s candidate from Lalitpur Constituency No. 1. Long regarded as a strong advocate of democracy, good governance, and institutional reform within the party, Rana’s candidacy is being seen as a continuation of the reform-oriented political line inside the Nepali Congress.

During the recently held special internal election (general convention) of the Nepali Congress, Rana clearly positioned himself within the party by openly supporting the reformist group led by Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma. He distanced himself from the traditional leadership style associated with party president Sher Bahadur Deuba, signaling a shift toward generational change and internal democracy.

Rana played an active and decisive role in campaigning for the Gagan Thapa–Bishwa Prakash Sharma team and was instrumental in supporting Gagan Kumar Thapa’s bid for party leadership. By consistently advocating for generational transition, transparency, accountability, and policy-driven politics, Rana emerged as a key figure in the movement to strengthen the Nepali Congress as a people-centered and institutionally robust party. As a result of his role and leadership, he was elected Joint General Secretary of the Nepali Congress.

Political analysts note that Rana’s alignment with the reformist camp reflects a growing trust in younger leadership within the party and a strong desire for change among party members. By acting as a bridge between senior leaders and the younger generation, Rana has helped energize ideological debate and internal dynamism within the party.

With his nomination from Lalitpur-1, Rana has indicated that his main campaign agenda will focus on good governance, constitutionalism, rule of law, and inclusive development. A former Member of the House of Representatives, Rana is widely recognized for his parliamentary experience, organizational leadership, and influence in national political discourse.

Party workers express strong confidence that, after years of remaining in the shadows while aligned with the Deuba faction, Rana will now take on a ministerial role following the election and make significant contributions to the development of Lalitpur Constituency No. 1.
