OpenAI Launches GPT-6 Sol and Luna, Promising Fewer Mistakes and Sharply Lower Costs

OpenAI has expanded its GPT-6 lineup with two new models, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, positioning them as faster, cheaper alternatives that carry over much of the intelligence from its flagship GPT-6 Astra model, which launched earlier this month.

The company said the new models were trained using methods similar to Astra’s, bringing improvements in professional work, factual accuracy, coding, computer use, and alignment down to more affordable tiers. According to OpenAI’s internal testing — based on real-world conversations where users had flagged errors — GPT-6 Sol makes roughly half as many mistakes as its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Sol, while reaching accuracy levels comparable to the larger Astra model at a fraction of the cost.

Pricing for both models dropped by 50% compared to the previous generation. GPT-6 Sol now costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, down from $4 and $20 for GPT-5.6 Sol. GPT-6 Luna costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens, down from $0.20 and $1.20. OpenAI said the lower prices reflect improvements in inference efficiency and prompt caching, and that this is now the standard pricing rather than a temporary promotion.

The two models serve different purposes within OpenAI’s lineup. Sol is designed for more demanding tasks such as complex coding and multi-step agent workflows, while Luna is built for high-volume, lower-latency work like summarizing documents, extracting information, or answering quick questions. On OpenAI’s AutomationBench evaluation of business workflows, the company said GPT-6 Sol outperformed a competing model from Anthropic while costing roughly 9% as much per task.

Beyond raw performance, OpenAI said the models adopt a more conversational communication style introduced with Astra — simplified language, less jargon, and slightly shorter responses without a loss of substance. The company also said Sol shows a lower rate of misleading claims about whether coding tasks were actually completed correctly, addressing a common criticism of earlier models.

Access is rolling out now across ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts, with enterprise administrators required to manually enable the new models. Notably, GPT-6 Luna is also being made available to free and lower-tier ChatGPT users through the desktop app, extending some of the upgraded capability beyond paying customers. OpenAI is keeping the GPT-5.6 family of models available during the transition.

The release comes just ahead of OpenAI’s DevDay event on September 29, and follows a similar release cadence seen in July, when OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 family launched before receiving price cuts weeks later amid growing competition from both domestic and international rivals in the AI model market.
