KANCHANPUR
Movement along the suspension bridge connecting Bhimdatta and Dodhara-Chandani municipalities in Kanchanpur has been halted after a section of the bridge was damaged on Wednesday morning.
The bridge over the Mahakali River sustained damage after one of its pillars was affected amid a strong river current following recent heavy rainfall.
According to Kanchanpur police, around six metres of the bridge section on the Dodhara-Chandani side was lifted, making the structure unsafe for pedestrians and vehicles. Traffic has subsequently been stopped along the bridge.
Police personnel have been deployed at the site to prevent people from crossing the damaged section and to monitor the situation.
The exact extent and cause of the structural damage are yet to be determined. Authorities are preparing for a technical inspection to assess the condition of the bridge and determine the repair measures required.
The suspension bridge, which is around 1.5 kilometres long and was built around 2001, has long served as an important link between Dodhara-Chandani and Bhimdatta. It has provided local residents with direct access to Mahendranagar and other parts of Nepal without having to travel through India.
The bridge continues to be used mainly by pedestrians and for local movement, even after the construction of a four-lane road bridge over the Mahakali River.
Authorities have urged people to avoid the damaged section until a technical assessment is completed and the necessary safety measures are put in place.
