Kathmandu, Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Gita Chaudhary has said that biodiversity conservation in Nepal is not only an environmental concern but is directly connected to sustainable development and human well-being.
Extending her best wishes on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity observed on May 22, Minister Chaudhary stated that stronger cross-sectoral coordination would be promoted in the coming days to make biodiversity conservation more effective.
She emphasized the importance of cooperation among the federal, provincial and local governments for achieving conservation goals.
“Nepal’s biodiversity plays a crucial role in maintaining food security, water availability, climate balance, soil fertility and the overall balance of ecological systems,” the minister said.
The International Day for Biological Diversity is being celebrated across the country today under the slogan “Acting Locally for Global Impact.” Nepal has been a party to the Convention on Biological Diversity since 1993.
Minister Chaudhary noted that biodiversity conservation, alongside climate change and pollution, has emerged as one of the three major global challenges, making conservation efforts a top priority.
Highlighting Nepal’s achievements in biodiversity protection, she pointed to the increasing populations of endangered species such as tigers and rhinos, expansion of protected areas, strengthening of community forest management and ecosystem conservation initiatives.
She stressed that biodiversity should be placed at the center of development planning while ensuring balanced conservation, sustainable use of natural resources and equitable distribution of benefits.
The minister also underlined that the long-term goal of achieving “life in harmony with nature” can only be realized through the active participation of women, indigenous peoples, local communities, relevant agencies and civil society.
She called on all stakeholders to continue their active involvement in biodiversity conservation campaigns.
